Being a lifeguard takes strong swimming skills and confidence in the water
We strongly encourage all students to practice the prerequisites prior to registering for a Lifeguard training course. Below is a partial list of local aquatic facilities that have open swim times. Swimming prerequisites are listed below.

American Red Cross Swimming Prerequisites:
- Swim 300 yards continuously: using these strokes front crawl using rhythmic breathing and stabilizing, propellant kick and breaststroke using a pull, breathe, kick glide sequence
- Swim and brick carry: swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive to 7-13 feet, retrieve a 10 pound diving brick, return to the surface and swim back to the starting point, keeping the face above water and holding the brick with both hands back to the starting point, set the brick on the deck. and exit the water in under 1 min 40 sec. Please note that the pool depth may be up to 13 feet and participants must retrieve the 10 pound brick from this depth.
- Tread water for 2 minutes: using only the legs.
